SNAP, NMAT, XAT, XLRI, and SPJAIN forms are out

It’s the time of the year when you would hardly find time to study because of the banal yet critical questions which keep on pestering you until you are admitted to a B’school. I take this opportunity to remind you all readers to get your forms filled well within time otherwise you may find yourselves denied your first priority centre. At the same time I would also like you to keep me updated on JMET forms, I have not read of them anywhere yet. I have myself been rather indolent as far as filling these forms is concerned. However, I have planned to fill them in a day or two I have scribbled all the information I could gather about these forms under:-
1. XAT 2009 – Sunday 4th January 2009.
XAT bulletin from branches of AXIS bank @ Rs 800/- www.xlri.edu (1st Sept to 30th Nov)
2. NMAT for Narsee Munjee - unfortunately the ad does not give the date of exam www.nmims.edu for online application.
3. SNAP 2008 – Sunday, 21st Dec 2008 9 1400 to 1600 hrs) Register online www.snaptest.org (till 25th Nov 2008).
4. SP JAIN – register online www.spjain.org (till Nov 30th, 2008) note that you can apply even after CAT 2008, (is that a misprint).

DI - no less than a scary movie

Having faced almost 10 odd papers of AIMCAT i have reached to a conclusion that the data interpretation section is no less than a scary movie. It has time and again ridiculed me inmy face. On analysis, i could make out the reason for the same though. It is precisely due to my lack of awarenessand definitely some part of the responsiblity needs to be shared by my coaching class. Having joined a coachingclass i was of the opinion that i need not take anyspecial efforts alteast to find out which type of problems i would have to face. But when i faced the actual paper i was taken aback especially by the DI sectionI would like to highlight the fact that though i had practised all the booklets provided by time i was unable to find manyquestion on any of the patterns, specially those which are based on the tournaments.
Having said all that the i am now forced to make very serious changes in my study schedule and that could impact my scores in other sections. Anyone who is targeting CAT'09 i would like to caution you against any such mistake. Be sure that you practiceall the different types of DI problems and as these problems do not need any type of prior prearation of knowledge I am sure you can sart solving them at the earliest possible.

Final Lap sprints - tips specially for the CAT takers

Dear Friends,
It's a very common experience with many of us and no one seems to be having a solution to it. The worst part of the story is that even though many would ask you to practice more you still dont find it working for you. Here i would like to ask you to take a break from your studies and just ruminate over your study methodology. I shall share with you my presonal experience and if you find yourself in a similar quagmire then i suppose the solution sighted by me may be of help to you.
I would like to bring it to your notice a fact that you must be aware of but would have never thought of it in this perspective. Any practice exercise that you take up has myrid problems of various diffuculty level. Apporachs for many of them are known to you. A Typical example of this problem would be :- Whats is the sum of all 3 digit numbers are there which are divisible by 7? This is a very typical problem on progression or numbers for that matter. Iam sure nobody would be able to give you the number off hand but alomst 90% can give you the approach atonce and the answer after a few min of calculations.
And there could be problems like :- mth term of an Ap is 1/n and nth term is 1/m then find the sum to mn terms? Now for most of us this problem is such where we dont have any approach. The traditional technique would be to write down some formulaes and then try to play some mathematical jugellery but in rare cases you would be successful, and your chances to succeed are further reduced if you take the exam pressure into consideration.
What you need to do in this case is to develop an approach to various such problems instead of spending your time on the problems with which you are comfortble. CAT is not an exam to test your speed. It used to be so earlier but the trend has changed off late. There is no sense practicing all those problem approach to which is already known to you unless you are thorugh with all the different varities. So my advice is you should first get a feel of all varities of problems and then go and practice each one individually.
A word of caution :- in doing to dont loose heart cause if you start attempting only the difficult problems you may end up frustrating yourselves in case you dont get the solutions to majority of the problems. But let me assure you, the more you practice on variety the better it is for your score in CAT.
Wish you Best of practice sessions.

A piece of advice for those who have have wavey scores

Dear Friends,
Its a very common phenomenon for majority ofthe CAT aspirants to have a percentile socre that wavers form a low of about 50 %ile to above 90%ile. Hereafter i shall refer to them as MFJN - Master of few but Jack of None. The reason for this to happen is that all these MFJN's are very having very limited exposure to the variety of problems. The first thing they need to do is to add variety ot their study material. Even if you attend a particual coaching calls donot limit urself to the notes of that class alone. The basic reason for a fluctuating score is that these people are more dependent on their luck than anything else. if they come across a paper which has problem which they are comfortable with they make a killing of it and otherwise they find themselves struggling. So the point i want you( is uppose only MFJNs are reading till now) to drive home is that u need to add varielty to your daily practice. You are bound to get the 90 %ile and above scores consistently as you have the capability to do it. Do it and see the results. You have all the fruits to enjoy and me the credit. Haha......
